ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION OF THE MO'AROA VALLEY
The national valley of Mo'aroa, located in the commune of Mataiea in Tahiti, is a large watershed of 1,500 ha.
Our domain — a concession signed in March 2023 with the Country — extends over an area of 230 ha. It is home to a low valley rainforest and a mesophilic formation on the ridges, constituting a unique ecosystem requiring appropriate conservation measures.
As part of our project, two large spaces were defined:
- 27 ha of Educational Forest, the first in Polynesia, dedicated to awareness, education, training, agroforestry and research.
- 203 ha of Biodiversity Sanctuary dedicated to conservation, regeneration, research and training.
The preliminary diagnosis — inventory of species and study of their distribution according to their biogeographic status — made it possible to define the restoration strategy according to a progressive scientific approach in 3 phases:
Phase 1:
• Elimination of invasive vines and trees/shrubs < 1 m,
• Multiplication and planting of native, endemic herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees
Phase 2:
• Elimination of invasive plants from 1 to 5 m
• Planting of native, endemic herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees
Phase 3:
• Maintenance and growth monitoring,
• Elimination of young invasive plants
