Terrestrial or epiphytic, these ferns are normally common in forest valleys, apape forests (Rhus taitensis) and mara forests (Neonauclea forsteri). Its uses by the ancients were both medicinal and ornamental. According to Paul Pétard, N. biserrata was reserved for the treatment of umbilical ulcerations in newborns following the fall of the cord.
