Native to Southeast Asia, the bancoulier was introduced during the Polynesian migrations and became naturalized in French Polynesia. A large tree with white inflorescences and globular fruit, it is one of the most traditionally used trees. Utilitarian, medicinal, cosmetic, alimentary and ornamental, its seeds were also used for lighting and to produce ink for tattoos.
